Thursday 6 October.
Yesterday afternoon, it was a
pleasure to join in the Lake District first year students who are
learning together during a week away from our campuses. In this
particular centre, project management students, trainee teachers and
students of sport have already benefited in this academic year from
such an experience. Our partnership with the outdoor venture wing of
Bradford metropolitan borough council allows students to pursue
activities such as kayaking and then to hear, as we did last night,
a presentation by an expert on what it is like to take the Great
Descent along one of the world's most powerful rivers in the
Himalayas.
Students are participating in research and learning from it, as they are also exploring their own resilience and absorbing ideas from another Leeds Met partnership, the Everest West Ridge 2006 expedition. Feedback from students on last year's nearest equivalent was highly positive and retention rates are sky high. Nonetheless, the team has still revamped the week, raising expectations and performance still higher. Students are working into the late evening and clearly enjoying the intensity of their academic as well as physical challenges. From kayaking to the curriculum, our students are being refreshed by running streams.
