Pokhara - eats

It could be argued that there are more quality restaurants in Lakeside than in Thamel. Maybe having spent more time there it's just that I've found more while looking around !

The old favourites are all still in place . . .

As always many offer the vast collection of continental, asian and mexican food. Some do specialise and they're the one's that I've given the best write-up.

As far as the majority are concerned it seems to me that you could literally have one same menu for all of them! The advantages are that there's always plenty of choice for people with different tastes - the disadvantage is that apart from the atmosphere, most of these places, from a food point of view, are all very much the same.

Authentic, Value, less cheap
KOTO n/a 45+ n/a 100-400 130 Great Authentic Japanese food, worth the extra for an odd night
Bistro Caroline n/a 200+ n/a 300-500 130 Excellent Bistro style food, wine available, good value & quality of food.

To summarise the table, my view is that the Hungry eye is the best for all round quality and value. The prices are low but the quality is brilliant. There's a free cultural dance show daily. (see the Boomerang, below for best breakfasts)

The Snowland and Everest steak house are at a first floor level and offer great quality and choice. The steak house portions are huge and the overall standard is high.

The Tibetan rice bowl is cheaper but offers great authentic tibetan food in a nice atmosphere.

For the general list the Boomerang is voted best mainly for it's great breakfasts and inspiring location. The Moondance is a great place offering better quality, but still the usual collection of dishes.

At the top end the KOTO offers authentic Japanese food in nice surroundings. The Bistro Caroline has a mouth watering menu at reasonable prices. In both cases the inclusion of alcohol with your meal up's the price considerably.

In General

There are many, many more restaurants, bars and cafes in Pokhara. I've included places on the list that have either been consistently good over the years, or have been outstanding at just one visit. There are many smaller cafes offering momo's and cheaper food for those on a budget, many hotels also have their own small restaurants.

Lastly, the omission of any restaurants from this page is no reflection on what it's like, I can only eat so much in a short visit to Nepal!
